About Yahad – In Unum

Since 2004, Yahad – In Unum has been dedicated to uncovering a hidden chapter of the Nazi genocide by identifying and documenting sites of mass executions of Jews and Roma during World War II. This mission involves meticulous field research collecting eyewitness testimonies, and locating mass grave sites. Over the past two decades, Father Patrick Desbois and Yahad – In Unum have pioneered the integrations of modern forensic methods into the study of what has come to be known as the “Holocaust by bullets.”

During the workshop, teachers will:

  • Learn about Jewish communities in the pre-war Soviet Union.
  • Explore the key elements of the Holocaust by Bullets.
  • Learn about Yahad – In Unum’s investigative methodology of research and fieldwork.
  • Discover the range of primary source materials central to Yahad – In Unum’s work  (Soviet, German, Polish and other local archives, memoirs, eyewitness testimonies).
  • Investigate in depth and cross-reference archival sources and eyewitness testimonies and learn how these can be used to enhance students’ critical thinking skills, their ability to compare and contrast and their capacity to integrate evidence from multiple relevant sources and interpretations into a reasoned argument.
  • Learn about contemporary mass crimes and genocides: mass killings of the Mayan population in Guatemala, Yazidi genocide in Iraq, war crimes in Ukraine.
  • Discuss how to address these topics with students, help them realize the “whys,”  “hows,” and “whats” behind different genocidal events and lead them to a better  understanding of how collective and individual actions can contribute to current efforts  to detect and prevent genocide.
  • Discuss means of connecting the past with the present and of making the study of the Holocaust relevant to students’ lives.
  • Explore ways to support students’ ability to respond to antisemitism and other forms of prejudice, hate and bias in their local communities.
  • Learn how to access and use Yahad – In Unum’s educational tools.
